Are You Ready For…

January 11th, 2010

Greetings…

The football playoffs are officially underway and since the closest
Da Bears are going to get to the Superbowl is a few feet from a TV,
my loyalties are now with my home team, the Arizona Cardinals. They
beat the Packers and are headed to New Orleans to play the Saints
next week. I would be a little more excited if they had invited
their defense to the game and as enjoyable as the win was, the
stress of the game and the overtime that had to be played gave me
and Flyboy plenty to gripe about. Flyboy was in Austin, Texas,
but made sure he called me every few minutes with some colorful
comments on the game. He had to leave as they started to play in
overtime and didn’t know they pulled it out until he got to the
airport to go to work…

Every team he ever roots for seems to do better when he DOESN’T
watch them play. Thank goodness he had to leave the hotel before
the game was over…

Although some people will not care, or even hate the next thing I’m
going to talk about, there are plenty that do care, so you can decide
whether or not you want to continue after the next line or two…

This week brings back that wonderful show you love to hate, American
Idol. There will be some changes this year with the biggest change
at the judges’ table. Paula Abdul is gone and Ellen DeGeneres will
be taking her place after a few weeks of the infamous bad performances
that make you wonder why you watch the show. I admit, the bad performances
are humorous and one reason why so many people actually watch the show…

Real talent has been discovered from the show such as Kelly Clarksen,
Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson, Chris Daughtry, to name a few. While
my all-time favorite, David Cook, may not have had the same commercial
success as the others, he’s still the one I never get tired of hearing,
no matter how many times I play his CD…

Last year had talent and although Kris Allen won the competition, the
whole season was Adam Lambert’s season and win or lose, you knew he
would probably do well and get plenty of publicity. Unfortunately,
the publicity became more about his sexual orientation and less about
his talent after the season ended. While there was no doubt in most of
our minds about Adam being Gay, it didn’t matter to me because I thought
he was a true entertainer and full of talent. I still feel that way and
after getting his CD, I think he will do just fine…

My “gripe” with Lambert is the way he behaved on the American Music Awards.
He not only pushed the envelope, he literally licked it and sent it around
the world. When Shakira simulated a sex act with a speaker on another music
awards show, I voiced my disgust at it and this is no different and NOT
because of a gay sex act. This goes with what I have been talking about
recently and the need to shock and throw good judgement out the window…

After his performance, he was banned from an appearance on Good Morning
America and when he went on the View, he was taped ahead of time, “just
in case”…

If I could sit down with the kid and talk to him, I’d say…

“Adam, we get it, you’re Gay…It’s not a problem, to each their own, but
honey…Gay, straight, bi-sexual, etc people have a responsibility to
represent the group they belong to in a way that prevents you from having
to apologize for your actions like you did the following day, week, and month…

Don’t feed into negative stereotypes when you have the power to educate and
embrace your stardom and hopefully enjoy it for many years…

I realize shock sells, but let people applaud you for your talent and not
for being the punchline of a joke.”

That’s what I would tell him and please, please, please…refrain from
sending me emails about Adam Lambert going to Hell for being Gay and
quoting Bible verses to try to prove your point…

I have many, many Gay readers who have been with me since I began writing
columns and I feel it only fair to issue a warning that I truthfully
wish I didn’t have to issue, but must…

If there are any insensitive or gay-bashing remarks posted to the blog, I
will pull them faster than a Tiger Woods text message…

I would just like to remind some of my “older” readers…Years ago everyone
loved Rock Hudson, (myself included). There were always rumors floating
around about his sexuality and it wasn’t until he was ill and diagnosed
with AIDS did the truth finally come out that he was Gay. I was heartbroken
for him, not because he was Gay, but because he was dying and to this day,
I love watching any and all movies with him in them, including the whimsical
ones with Doris Day. Can you go from loving someone one day and hating
them the next that easily…

Never mind, I just realized, given the high divorce rate…you can :-)

I realize I can’t change anyone’s minds regarding this issue and I dont plan
on trying. The issue at hand was poor taste and poor judgement, and oh yeah…

The next season of American Idol…

Guess I better get ready for some real “nice” emails huh? Incomingggggggggg…
